US MAIL TRAFFIC REPORT SEPTEMBER 30, 2024

USPS TURNS IN A VERY GOOD WEEK AT A CRITICAL TIME

Well, I must be honest:  I was not expecting this.  Just at the moment when the Postal Service begins to get hit with heavy volume, they turn in a very strong performance.  OK, 84.5% on time First-Class letters is not great, but in context it’s pretty good.  87.6% on time for First-Class flats is pretty good in any context, and it was a big sample of First-Class flats this week mailing from many facilities.

Marketing Mail generally has a very good on-time percentage, but they were exceptional this week.

First-Class flats may have benefitted from political mail, which loves flats and those tend to be inducted near delivery.

Fluky week?  We’ll see.  We’ll see the results of Hurricane Helene next week I would expect.  A number of facilities closed at least temporarily, and some may be closed for a while.

Still…good week!
